Venlo, the small Dutch town on the border with the Lower Rhine, is a very popular destination for excursions and shopping in the Lower Rhine region. Because especially in sunshine, the numerous terrace cafes tempt you to linger. But Venlo offers more than good shopping. In the small town you will find buildings worth seeing, as well as diverse cultural attractions. With the redesign of the urban area on the Meuse, Venlo has also become more attractive.
The Town Hall Market is one of the most beautiful squares in the city of Venlo. The square is in front of the historic town hall, a remarkable building in the Renaissance style. If you come to Venlo you should take a seat in one of the street cafes and enjoy the harmonious atmosphere of the place. Also worth seeing is the church “Sint Martinuskerk” with its old baptismal font from the 17th century and the carved altar from the 15th century.
During a tour of the city, take a look at the facades of the houses, even if that is not so easy due to the numerous business advertisements. You will be surprised by the many beautiful old art nouveau houses. Some museums in Venlo also appear interesting. For example, modern works of art are shown in the “Het Museum van Bommel van Dam”. The museum “Het Limburgs Museum” presents the history and culture of the province of Limburg through numerous exhibits. Concerts can also be listened to in the former monastery of Venlo, which now houses the “Domani” cultural center.

Europe’s largest indoor, leisure and adventure park, the “Toverland”, is much more exciting. It not only offers its visitors one of the most modern wooden roller coasters, but also classic carousels in addition to other spectacular rides. The amusement park can be reached via the A67 motorway from Venlo towards Eindhoven. The park has something to offer for all family members, and several restaurants take care of the physical well-being. But there is also the possibility to distort your own drinks and dishes.
Incidentally, if you are already in Venlo, you should try the delicious Dutch fries. These are served with various sauces in numerous snack bars. If you like fish, you should eat one of the tasty matjes bread at the market. Not to be forgotten is the cheese from Holland, which can be found in Venlo both in the popular supermarket “Die 2 Brüder von Venlo”, as well as at the cheese retailer on the market or on the shopping street. The selection is difficult here, because the well-known Dutch Gouda is offered here in various degrees of maturity.
A tip at the end: Pay special attention to cyclists in Venlo and Holland, because they have an extra privilege in Holland. If you are cycling to Venlo yourself, use the well-signposted cycle path network. Holland is a nation of cyclists, so it is sometimes surprising for tourists how many people cycle around the city.
