From spring onwards, there are numerous cows on the pastures and meadows on the Lower Rhine.
Some of these are so curious that as soon as someone stops at the fence, they come running. Others, however, prefer to stay lazy in the shade of trees. From the black and white spotted dairy cow to calves to bulls, you can watch various cows on the pastures on the Lower Rhine.
Cattle breeding has a long tradition on the Lower Rhine, because some areas on the Lower Rhine, the so-called wet meadows, are not suitable for arable farming. Cows and other breeding cattle have been allowed to graze on these damp pastures for centuries. Often the cows are dairy cows, but other cattle are also raised in the Lower Rhine region, such as Galloway cattle, which thanks to their shaggy fur can stay on the pastures even on cool days. In order to be able to sell the animals well later, the Cattle Union was formed in Krefeld. So many cattle are auctioned here as rarely anywhere else.
