Nature Reserve Salmorth

One has a particularly good view of this typical Lower Rhine landscape from the dike tops of the Drusus dike.
Wide meadows and the mighty Rhine in the background create a wonderful panorama, especially in the light of the rising or setting sun. For example, you can start your hike from the only small community within the floodplain, Schenkenschanz.
The path then leads past the Griethauser Altrhein to the Rhine, after about 3 kilometers downstream you finally return to Schenkenschanz. What you get to see on your hike, however, depends on the degree of flooding of the floodplain. Sometimes only a few farmsteads and taverns look out of the water. Otherwise you can see numerous aquatic plants and reed species, as well as a wide variety of meadow plants.

In the places where there is a lot of water, for example at the so-called pools, water holes that were created in the past by dike breaches, not only numerous birds, but also amphibian species and dragonflies can be observed.
